Last week has been quite eventful and my Instapaper folder is so full of links I once again had to make tough decisions.
First of all, there were Gay Pride parades pretty much all over the world, events that usually leave behind throngs of colourful images of happy people.
For some reason this is the one I saved from the lot. It’s nowhere near the most colourful, but I loved it, so here you go.
Last week’s other big thing was South Sudan gaining independence. I knew very little about their situation, I just remember the overwhelming 99% of the population voting YES at last January’s referendum, when they where asked whether they wanted to split from the rest of Sudan.
In that occasion I also remember thinking: “Wow, people in the rest of Sudan must really suck!”
Anyway, more happy people here, and I’m sorry if some of my posts are starting to resemble a list of links to the Boston Globe.
Another huge thing was the Shuttle’s last flight.
The Economist’s 2nd of July cover pretty much sums up how people of my generation might feel about it: The end of the Space Age.
Of the many pictures of the Atlantis’ last flight I chose the following one. The effect is somehow related to sonic boom and layers of air compressed by speed.
Whatever the details (which I’m not acquainted with), I think it’s pretty epic (source: Reddit).
Thanks for everything, old spaceship. Rest well.
Last week there was a huge sand storm in Arizona.
A dear friend of ours lives there, so we were kind of concerned about the whole thing, even if apparently it was just a harmless display of Mother Nature’s awesomeness.
I think these two pictures are pretty cool.
Other amazing pictures I stumbled upon last week:
Somewhere in Japan:
Somewhere in Chile:
and somewhere in Frank Zappa’s parents’ house:
